Shugen Ma (M'91, SM'10, F'18) received his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering Science from the Tokyo Institute of Technology (Japan) in 1991. After obtaining the degree, he worked at Komatsu Ltd, University of California (Riverside, USA), Ibaraki University (Japan), and Ritsumeikan University (Japan), respectively. In December 2023, he then moved to the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), where he is a professor in the Thrust of Robotics and Autonomous Systems. His current research interests include the design and control theory of new types of robots, field robotics, and Bio-robotics. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, a fellow of the AAIA, a fellow of the JSME, and a member of the SICE and the Robotics Society of Japan. He is the general chair of IROS 2022, was Associate Editor of the IEEE Transaction on Robotics from 2003 to 2007, Editor of Advanced Robotics from 2007, and serves many societies and conferences.
