How will it be until the majority of new cars sold will be electric vehicles? Why?

IEEE Spectrum recently noted that  The EV Transition Is Harder Than Anyone Thinks. 

Given the well-publicized merits of electric vehicles, it is a bit surprising to many  that the transition to electric vehicles is taking so long.  How long do you think it will be until the majority of new cars sold will be electric vehicles?  Why?  For argument's sake, let us consider "new cars sold" to be cars and SUVs sold in the US.
