Is it time to reconsider the safety and efficacy of nuclear power?

A recent IEEE Spectrum article pointed out that Australia Debates Going Nuclear and noted that the U.S. Senate [had] passed legislation to develop advanced nuclear technologies. At one time, building new nuclear power plants seemed almost unthinkable. But new nuclear technology keeps appearing and I see new nuclear plants being seriously discussed. Is it time to reconsider the safety and efficacy of nuclear power?
