Is encouraging STEM majors a good - or bad - idea?

A recent opinion piece detailed  Why pushing STEM majors is turning out to be a terrible investment. Much of its argument centered on the fact that many STEM majors do not go on to work in STEM fields - and inferred that educating students in STEM fields that find work in other fields is a poor investment.  Do you agree with that assessment? Do you believe encouraging students to pursue STEM majors is a good - or a bad - idea.
