Do you use self checkout machines? Will AI make them better?

I sometimes use self checkout machines - as they are fast and convenient.  At other times, I don't because they are really annoying. Recently, McDonalds tried to use AI to improve their drive-through experience - but found it made the experience worse. 
Do you use self checkout tech? 
Do you think AI will make the self checkout experience better?  Why?
Do you think there is a cost-savings with self-checkout?
Do you think there is increased loss for the store?
